Chocolate: The British Chocolate Industry

Chocolate: The British Chocolate Industry is a new book from Shire Publishing by Paul Chrystal and Joe Dickinson including photography by Mark Sunderland.

Chocolate

Chocolate

This book charts the history of chocolate manufacture, marketing and consumption in Britain from its origins in the eighteenth century. It then describes the golden age from 1900 to the 1970s and the subsequent US and Swiss invasions, spearheaded by brands such as Mars, Toblerone and Nestlé’s Milky Bar, including the takeovers by Nestle and Kraft.

Photographs by Mark include images of Joe Dickinson’s amazing collection of Rowntree’s memorabilia, and Mark did most of the still life and copy photography for the book.

Knaresborough feva Mini-Workshop

I’m running a short taster landscape photography workshop for Natural Light Photography Workshops as part of the feva festival in Knaresborough this year, including an informal talk and practical tuition on a short walk to the castle and river.

Boat Number 62, River Nidd

We will start with a talk on subject selection, how to make the most out of lighting and composition, followed by a short walk to Knaresborough’s famous castle and riverside with detailed tuition on exposure along the way. The workshop is ideally suited to digital SLR users but any camera that offers full manual control over exposure will be fine. If you have a tripod then bring that along!

Maximum 5 participants, £35 per person

Tuesday 16th August 2011, 2-6pm

Chalk Cliffs at Sunset

Chalk Cliffs at Sunset

The new site has a completely re-designed portfolio section including a Recent Work folder so you can easily keep up to date with the latest images added to the site.  There are also some previously unseen images in the Wild Places and American West galleries.  In Wild Places,   San Valentin, Sunrise follows on from San Valentin showing the dramatic change in light as the sun comes over the horizon illuminating the peaks of the southern Andes alongside Lago General Carrera in Chile. In the American West gallery, an old 5×4 shot of The Mittens in Monument Valley before dawn has been added, and to close out this gallery The Mittens at Sunset shows this iconic formation at the other end of the day.

Also added to the site is a brand new Articles section which includes an interview and some travel and photography technique features – more articles will be added from time to time so keep checking back to the new marksunderland.com!

Eduardo Niebla My Yorkshire Road Concert Premiere

Here is the flyer for the concert premiere of “My Yorkshire Road” by Eduardo Niebla, featuring an image from the shoot I did with Eduardo on Twistleton Scar in the Yorkshire Dales. The shoot was great fun, but we did get some odd looks from passing walkers as we slogged up Twistleton Scar armed with camera gear, tripod, Spanish guitar and concert shoes! Eduardo’s new suite of music is inspired by the North Yorkshire landscape, culture and heritage and premieres at Holy Trinity Church, Kirkby Road, Ripon on Saturday 23rd July and as part of the Ryedale Festival in Danby on Sunday 24th July.
